Beware of Dot Pl Domain Expirations – Uważaj na wygaśnięcie domeny kropka Pl

A domain typically enters Redemption about 45 days after its expiration date if it is not renewed or purchased by a 3rd party. However, certain top-level domains may enter redemption status the day after the domain’s expiration date.

Today I go to renew a domain name with the domain extension .pl it expires on the 6th of February and the renewal fee was bumped up by an “internal redemption fee” even though it has not expired. So as you can imagine I phoned Godaddy and they explained that POLAND has a rule that if you do not renew your domains before 14 days of the expiration date they will charge £45.63 + VAT on top of the price of the domain name because according to them the domain goes into redemption.

Excuse me but am I missing something, redemption should start from the day the domain expires not 14 days before.

“Poland Registry is a bunch of thieves”.

I am now going to let the domain drop completely and notify my other registrar to drop-catch it. No way am I going to pay these scammers a penny more than what the domain is worth.

UPDATE 02/02/23 – AKTUALIZACJA 02.02.23

I emailed ICANN yesterday and you can view the response below both in English & Polish. I also emailed the Polish Registry (NASKA) similar to the UK version of NOMINET and you can read the response which I have translated. It seems to me that Godaddy is saying this redemption fee has nothing to do with them, ICANN is saying the same and the Polish registry also is saying it has nothing to do with them.

The mind boggles.

Moral of the Story – Morał historii

Avoid buying country code (.PL) domain extensions unless you plan to renew them well in advance, although it cannot be 61 days earlier than expiration or 14 days later of auto-renewal. If auto-renewal fails the domain gets canceled.

Stick with dot com, which I have done, and will sue anyone if my domain Polish version drops and cannot be drop caught by me with a different registrar.

(seems a bit of a coincidence my domain disappeared when I gave them the name of the domain, I cannot renew even if I wanted to).

In order to renew a domain, its registrant should follow the procedure of an authorized registrar. If the domain registrant cares about its uninterrupted operation, he should renew it with his registrar before the end of the paid billing period, taking into account the deadlines necessary for posting the payment, etc.

Godaddy Update 03/02/23

Upon going back to see if Nask had dropped the redemption fee, my domain has disappeared. So even if I wanted to renew with the scamming fee I am unable to do so. I will start a UDRP on anyone that registers the domain name as I have the dot com version. I have secured the dot com version of the domain in question but this is not the last NASK will hear from me… I am now going to up the stakes and enforce they give me all the data they have on all my (.PL) domain names, just like I can get all the data of all my (.co.uk) domains by logging into my Nominet account.
